    Default Is this an example of an Idiom?

    "I`d better get back to work before the old battle-ax fires me."
    Is this an idiom? If it is, then what does this idiom mean?

    The term "battle ax" originally referred to a weapon of war used in ancient times but currently refers to a domineering woman that could be a boss or even a wife.

    No. This means that the person had better return to work before the woman in charge terminates the employment of the late person.

    Given that idioms are generally held to be phrases that have a meaning that is different from the dictionary meaning of the individual words, battleax[e] isn't an idiom, but you could call it an idiomatic usage if you like, though its meaning is given in dictionaries, but it has changed quite a lot from the original meaning.
