What's the meaning of the following expression, saying:
* The blacker the berry the sweeter the juice

I am not familiar with that expression but I think it just means that the riper the berry fruit the sweeter ther juice will be from that berry.

It's an African American expression and inverts common conceptions about ethnicity.

I always thought it referred to blackberries. When my grandmother and I picked them, she used that phrase quite often. Am I correct to use this phrase in this way?

TDOL is correct. Among African-Americans there used to be (and maybe still is) prejudice favoring lighter-skinned Blacks. The berry expression is sort of a "comeback" to someone who may make an unfavorable (sexual) comment about a dark-skinned member of the opposite sex.
