Default What does "hold audience with oneself" mean?

I came across an English phrase "to hold audience with oneself", which I failed to find the definition in all the dictionaries available, Could anybody tell me what it means? Thank you very much!

When monarch and important people receive visitors, they give them an audience, so presumably this person is doing it alone.
