It is an honor for me to do what?

Hi,

today, during a job interview for a freelancer, he told me, that it would be an honor for him to work for me.
He is Chinese and only spoke Chinese, but my translator put it into those words.

Later on, I discussed it with my girlfriend and she was of the opinion, that it's a very polite, but normal expression for employees.
I tend to say, that this is rather not used in common business language - for me it feels more like a hollywood movie "it is an honor to fight on your side, sir" - during war etc.

Would native English speakers really use honor for a freelance job or job interview or something?
I sense it's a bit exaggerated - maybe I'm wrong?

When accepting offers, people can use it. It may seem a bit over the top for some freelance work, and I don't think I'd use it there, but then again if desperate for the work, I might. I do associate it more with promotion to a senior rank, taking on positions with serious responsibilities, etc, than freelancing.
