Most of the explanation of 'sugar dad' is right. But there is a twist. As excess sugar is not good for health and sweetness is often coated over any bitter or tasteless item (like chewing gums), this 'dad' is also good superficially by giving gifts with a motive of some unpleasant things.

With the idiom, the concept of goodness and superficiality is entirely down to the attitude of the user- it may be seen as superficial and materialistic by some, but those in search of a sugar daddy will see the idiom in a poisitive light.
