can somebody please explain the usage and meaning of <given the benefit of the doubt>??

It means that you may have doubts or questions, but will ignore them for the time being to look positively on something or someone.

In any trials, judgements are always in favour of the convict unless conclusively proved guilty.

In games, benefit of doubt by the referee always goes to the loser.
