Dawkins is discussing the revulsion that some opponents of Darwin felt at the idea of man being closely related to the apes. He says that Darwin liked to regularly point out how, in all sorts of ways, the similarities were many. So, when his opponents were saying that the differences between man and ape were too great to support his theory, Darwin never missed an opportunity to put the other side (of the argument).
