Your friend is asking you what you are doing at this moment in time, or he may be asking in a general sense if there is anything interesting happening.

"What's cooking?" is a colloquialism for "what's going on?" or "what do you have planned for the day?" (depending upon the context).

It is much more likely to be used between friends to find out what is going on [ A meets B, who is on the way to a bus: "Hey, xxxx, what's cooking? anthing I might like?" "Well, maybe. A bunch of us are going to the mall to hang out for a while, maybe have a latte or two. Come along if you like."]
