A colloquialism is just everday language, not formal, while an idiom is a phrase whose meaning isn't obvious from the meanings of the words that make it up:
Fiver (five pounds)- colloquial language, but not an idiom
I'll eat my hat- an idiom, whose meaning has nothing to do with eating hats.
