Default I have not found this idiom in my dictionary!

hi,

Who can tell me the meaning of "born to the purple''. I know this is an idiom. I have searched for its meaning on the internet but I have not found anything related to it. Those who know its meaning please give also an example.

Thank you in advance!

In ancient Rome, purple-edged togas were a symbol of superior social status- does that make sense?

It means, literally, to be born to royalty. Figuratively, it means to be born to wealth and priviledge.

Wilfred was born to the purple, but wasted his time hanging out with his low-life college friends.
