| This is probably what the original post probably means by words going to waste. The focus is on the listeners. If you want to concentrate on the speaker (the disappointment at your words having no effect), you say 'I might as well have saved my breath': I kept telling them not to go near the edge, but I might as well have saved my breath. b |
