Default push my buttons

Can anyone explain the idiom or the phrase "push my buttons?"
It is used commonly in American daily lives.
They use like this: "Man! That guy can push my buttons."

Does this mean that the guy makes me angry?
Why and how?

- but more than that: he knows exactly how to make you sad/jealous/ happy/angry/etc (as if you had buttons on you marked Sad Jealous Angry and so on, and he could manipulate your moods just by pressing them.)

Probably the most common use of "push my buttons," however, is to indicate that someone really knows how to upset or annoy you. They have found out something that bothers you, and take pleasure in doing or saying it.
