Grape vine

I heard it on the grape vine.

I know what it means and how to use it but I never found a good explanation about its origin.

Can anyone shed some light on this please?

So they compared the telegraph-net with the tendrils of the grape vine what demoted the whole thing to the level of a bush telegraph.
Makes sense.
