Default was you on the phone vs were you on the phone?

Hi!
Could you please advise, which is correct if I am talking about single person:

was you on the phone yesterday?
were you were on the phone yesterday?

"Were you on the phone?" is correct.
It would also sometimes be correct to say
"Was it you on the phone?"

Examples in context:
"Your number was engaged when I tried you before, were you on the phone?"

"I heard someone talking just now, were you on the phone?"

"Someone called me and then hung up, was it you on the phone?"

or something like that!

In Ebonics . . . it would be "Was you on the phone." :) But technically, it should be "Were."

And to confuse matters, the answer to "Were you on the phone" (if you were) is "Yes, I was"

Have you learned how to conjugate verbs yet?

I was
You were
He was
(...)


"you were" becomes "were you".
