If you are up to speed with a subject or activity, you have all the latest information about it and are able to do it well.

e.g1# We arranged for some home tutoring to get him up to speed with the other children in his class.

2#Before we start the meeting I'm going to bring you up to speed with the latest developments.

Thanks for bringing me up to speed on this!
(It isn't exactly right, since we aren't talking about "the latest developments" or anything, but I just wanted to use it.)

You're welcome. The developments don't have to be "new", per se; they have to be "new" to the person who wasn't up to speed.
