Default what is the meaning of the sentence?

Dear teachers,
The following sentence is from BBC news website.

He pledged the government would "leave no stone unturned" in their investigation and said inquiries had already been made into 33 cases of civilian deaths, injuries or ill treatment in Iraq.

what is the meaning of "leave no stone untured"?

thanks!

I think it means that the government will do everything in its power to throw light on that cases.

Teachers, please correct me if needed.

That's very good. It should be "those" cases - plural.

Hi, Mandy. "To leave no stone unturned" is an idiom. It creates the idea that someone is investigating and will turn over every stone or other object looking for clues. It implies a very thorough investigation.

It means to look in every nook and cranny, to search carefully, to even pick up every thing and look under it.

Crooks are often called "snakes." Snakes hide under rocks. Turn over every stone (rock) and find the snake or whatever is hiding there.
