excess bagagge
* excess baggage - Informal. an unnecessary burden.
Ex. You are going for a business trip which would be really exhaustive on your part. But your family wants to be with you for some vacation, they think, and you don´t want it. Still, they managed to go with you. You may think that they are just ¨excess baggage¨ because they are just a burden that is supposedly not with you at that moment.
Could you please give comments and corrections.
Thanks!

For them to be "excess baggage" they would have to be with you.

In my example, his family went with him to the trip though they are not necessarily needed.

I would be careful about calling my wife excess baggage. She probably wouldn't appreciate it.

Re: excess bagagge
on a trip, " excess baggage " is stuff you packed to bring along which was not necessary and as such may also be a burden to carry ...it is also often used to refer to peoples' emotional state meaning that emotionally, or psychologically they are complicated by things that happened to them in the past that adversely affect their current state of being...
.. his last two unsuccessful relationships made him "damaged goods" and too encumbered with "excess baggage" to trust as a wholesome partner..
