I wonder if there is an idiomatic expression in English to describe the behaviour of a person who in front of two opposing points does not take a position and tries to agree with one and with the other opponents. the equivalent expression in Italian would be " (dare) un colpo al cerchio e uno alla botte" .

'Fence-sitter' implies complete neutrality, but I think what you're getting at is a little different. As soon as I can think of how to translate this, I'll write.

How about 'run with the hare and hunt with the hounds' = to support two competing sides in an argument
