To me, the phrase refers to the complexity of a person's thinking and behavior. In the song, she sings that the person she loves understands the pieces of her (life).

I think it means different parts of my personality. (I think the phrase has a similar meaning in Ashlee Simpson's song.)

Why did you use "in" in the above sentence? Can't we use "of" there?
If not, can you make me understand why not?
