Hi. Has anyone heard of "let me break a sword for John", meaning "let me say a word of support for John"? This would be used especially when John is being criticized/attacked. I distinctly remember hearing often at work in the US many years ago, but today I cannot find a single quotation via google.

It sounds like a colloquialism used by a small group. It's the sort of phrase that someone coins and others pick up, but which does not go into general usage.
