Default Kettle of Fish

Anyone know where this comes from, me and some friends were talking the other night and couldnt work out where "Thats a different kettle of fish" came from.

Anybody help?

Incidently a little bonus for anyone with a mobile on orange - I found out today that if you text 241 to FILM you get a free ticket to be used with a purchased one. Me and my girlfriend are going to the cinema tonight :> Enjoy....

I have tried to find an answer for you but I found out there is no clear, cut and dried explanation. There are a few theories regarding the origins of that particular phrase. First, have a look at:

http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-ket1.htm

Also, a different explanation is given at:

Hope that explains things somewhat for you.
