When an idiom is used over and over again, it is referred to as a cliché [klee-SHAY] - and writers are taught to avoid clichés, to use some more original way of expressing something.
I used to say, "That Shakespeare! He was not a good writer. All he did was string one cliché after another!"
[Of course, the joke in this is that Shakespeare created the cliché in the first place, originally!]
