I was thinking of "a number of techniques" when I said "group." I want to say "the best of all these techniques"

Very beautiful idiom from France This is however used to refer to a group of persons and not one person in particular. Eg they are 'la crème de la crème' [either in an area or at doing something]. Meaning there's not any group above that one. The best group ever.

As for a person in particular, I would say the leader, the captain, the tribal chief

Not a teacher at all, though
