Question blood hound

Hello everyone! A have a question for native speakers :)
Can the word (or two words) "bloodhound/blood hound" mean "a blood-thirsty man, a maniac"? I've looked throuth several online dictionaries and found that "bloodhound" is a dog breed, but at the same time the word "hound" can mean "an addict or devotee" (for example "an autograph hound"). So can this word ("hound") be used with "blood" to mean something like "blood addict"? Thakns in advance!

Hi, b.a.d.! Welcome to the forums!

This native speaker has never heard the term 'blood hound' when referencing an individual who is 'addicted to blood'. It is not common usage in North America.

Perhaps an author might use the term to describe a vampire but, once again, it is not common usage in day to day conversation.

Cheers,
Amigo

Great thanks, Amigo! I've got it :)) Just one more thing to ask. Now I know it is not usually used in common conversation. But can it be used for example, in a song? I'm playing in a metal band and write some lyrics for us. And one of our songs has a chorus like that:

"I'm a blood-hound forever!
I'm a blood-hound to the bone!"

- the song is meant to be about people who love horror films, scenes of violence etc., so in the chorus the singer tells that he is that kind of a man. When I was writing that stuff I trusted one of our online english-russian dictionaries, but looking though several pages during the last month, made me have some doubt in the rightness of using this word. Thanks again!

Hi, b.a.d.!

Yes! Definitely! You can write lyrics to mean anything you want them to mean! Let the listener interpret their own meanings for your songs!

"I'm a blood-hound forever!
I'm a blood-hound to the bone!" You have made your lyrics ambiguous enough that the listener could think you are capable of tracking someone (like a bloodhound can track people) or that you are a big fan of blood!!!!

Good luck with your band!

Have you checked out the "Blood Hounds" musical group online?

Cheers,
Amigo

...
And given the association of dogs with eating bones, 'to the bone' is very neat.

I don't think English has a word to describe someone who likes violent/horror films, apart from some composite like 'horror movie freak'. A person addicted to actual violence is a psychopath, and a being addicted to actual blood is a vampire... But that's our problem! Your lyrics are fine.
