Do you have a question? (It's not an expression I've met, but if I did I'd assume that "yard" meant a long drinking vessel, as used to serve 'a yard of ale': http://www.barmans.co.uk/productimg/14671_large.jpg - so that the expression would mean 'not much use at all [that is, useless]'.) This would make it have the same force as the (idiomatic) 'as much use as a chocolate tea-pot'.

About as much use a ....

Some that come to mind

"About as much use a chocolate teapot" - It would melt.
"About as much use an ashtray on a motorbike" - Cant smoke through a helmet or when riding, the ash would just blow out of the tray.

You can make the comparison even more belittling by using 'almost' instead of 'about'. If something's almost as much use as a chocolate tea-pot it's really REALLY useless.

What has this to do with similes or the discussion above? That is one cool projection clock!


This clock projects the time, date, or temp on the wall or ceiling some people call
it a ceiling clock but I call it a digital projection clock. I got the black one because at the time that was the only color
they had. But now they have them in black and also in white.
