I don't know the meaning of "a piece of meat" in the sentence:"After 90 years, we are a piece of meat". Could any of u pleased explain it to me?

I looked at the piece you refer to on the Bloomberg website; what the man is saying is 'after 90 years in this business they are treating us like 'a piece of meat' in other words, not as human beings.
