Honor among thieves

I'd like to know how this idiom/expression came to be, its original and first use. Was it used by any authors, sounds like something that Shakespeare may have written.
Any heolp will be appreciated.

I am a first time user here, and need, or would love to get some guidance as to what's proper, and how can I get the most benefit fropm this.
