Intern vs practical training
Greetings! Whats the correct word to describe the training u take part as a student?
I have found two possible words Intern and Practical Training.
At the last year of my undergraduate studies I have spend a whole academic year in the Digital Communications Laboratory (National Centre of Scientific Research "DEMOKRITOS"). It was an exceptional experience to work and cooperate with the research staff there. My intern on the Enthrone research project helped me put my knowledge into practice

As a student in undergraduate studies it's more useful to say 'practical training'. 'Intern', which refers to the same idea of practical experience, is more common for someone who's already received a qualification/ certificate of study. I've heard it used mainly by doctors in American English, and your quote gives another example.

You must have discovered during the 90s, as I did, that the White House also has interns. David Letterman also often talks about the interns on his show (who seem to make the coffee and photocopy things). It's not a word we use in Australia, so I'm not really sure what they do either (except for medical interns).

Re: Intern vs practical training
A student will receive practical training in a given area, typically paying to be educated.
An intern has completed a course of study as a student and, instead of paying to be educated, is paid (probably poorly) as they continue training in their chosen field. Apprentice, perhaps?
