In #`1 and #3, the idea is 'bring ourselves up to date on', perhaps 'do some extra work, because we are behind'.


I assume that #2 has a similar meaning, but the with seems unnatural to me.

Yes. But, for me, that implies, initially at least, arranging some form of contact. Once that has been done, we can catch up on their news.

I think that all three sentences mean about the same. That is,

I have been on vacation for two weeks. Just traveling around the

my country. I have not paid any attention to the news. Neither

have I spent any time in reading. Now that I am home, I need to

catch up. = make up for lost time. There are two weeks' worth of

newspapers on the table. I'll catch up on the news by going through

all those papers and see what I have missed. And I will finally finish

reading that novel that I started two weeks ago.
