Hi ovair,

Get off

- Escape punishment Because this was his first offense, I bet he will get off with only a warning.
- Leave a bus, train, etc. If you're looking for Center City, you need to get off at the next station. (I don't see this as phrasal - "off" is a true preposition here.)
- Finish, leave work What time do you get off tonight? My shift doesn't end until 7.
- Start a journey I'd like to get off to an early start tomorrow. Will you be ready to leave by 6?
- Help a baby or child sleep I'm not familiar with this use
- Orgasm, have sex (Note: This is a bit vulgar. I wouldn't use this with my mother.) He really gets off thinking about Elizabeth Hurley when he has sex with his wife.
- Manage to fire a gun The bank robber got off two shots before being overpowered by the guard. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
- Stop talking on the phone Oops. The kids are home. I've got to get off now. Talk to you soon!
- Write or send letters, messages, etc I'm not famaliar with this use.
- Say or write something funny I'm not familiar with this you.

- Help a baby or child sleep >>
It took for ever to get the baby off to sleep tonight.

- Write or send letters, messages, etc >.
I must get this letter off in tonight's post.
I must get off this letter tonight.

Ah yes - I was stuck in the mindset of not breaking the two words apart. But even so, I wouldn't say "It took me forever to get the baby off tonight," but rather "to get the baby off to sleep" - so that isn't really using "get off" as a phrasal for "get to sleep," is it?
