Hello all,
what do we mean by the following idiom "Go out the window" ?

to no longer exist, disappear, particularly in relation to plans one has:
I was planning a hike up Mount Kilimanjaro in summer, but that went out the window when I broke my leg.
Everything he worked for in politics, his whole career, went out the window as soon as the scandal broke.
