| "Good evening" is both a greeting and a farewell. "Good night" is only a farewell, or said to another when one of you is going to sleep. |

| Not quite. BobK was correcting your grammar: "You wanted to know the difference", or "You wanted to know what makes them different." "Good night" is a farewell, and said to another/others when (1) you are parting at some point in the evening, and (2) to others in the same house when you are going to bed. Not just, It is when one is going to sleep. |
