how can I know if a noun is countable or uncountable?
Some noncount nouns:

The word "effort" is a count noun.
Like other count nouns, it takes an article. Examples:
an effortIt's not usual, but you can put a number in front of it. Example:
an orange
an hour
an opera
an audition
an audience
He made two efforts, then he quit.
