well, i think the mistake is using the past tense "had" it sould be "was having". I'm not sure of the reason. may be the time of the action was progressive.

This thread appears to have been moved to the Teacher Training forum because of its misleading title. The thread itself is about a grammar problem, not a teacher training one, and would be better in the Ask a Teacher forum.
'Past simple/continuous problem' would have been a more useful title.

The having of the bath began before the ringing of the telephone, and continued through and after it. This is a classic example of the past progressive (continuous) for 'framing' a past simple action.
