Could you please give me the correct usage of the expression 'it's the first time'. The only usage I have come across is: 'It's the first time' + present perfect i.e. It's the first time I've tasted sushi. However, I'd like to know if this tense should be used in anticipation of an action i.e. when I am just about to taste sushi but have not yet done so, or should I say 'this is the first time I'm tasting/will taste .....'? Your reply would be greatly appreciated:)

In the U.S. your statement in anticipation of "tasting" as, "This is the first time I have tasted sushi" is OK. Or to be perfectly correct you could say, "This will be the first time that I will have tasted sushi." Also, because "to taste" is considered both a stative (non-action) and dynamic verb, you should not use Present Continuous/Progressive with first person singular e.g. "I am tasting sushi for the first time" is not correct.

Yes, or "This is the first time I will have tasted sushi."
Or "This will have been the first time I have tasted sushi."
Or even "This will have been the first time I had tasted sushi."
But you'd have to be desperately in the need of the correct tense for the context to use some of these!

Personally, I think I'd say:
"This will be the first time I have tasted sushi."

I don't see anything wrong with "I am tasting sushi for the first time."

Nor do I see anything wrong with 'This is the first time I will taste sushi.' or 'This will be the first time I taste sushi.'

and this?

This is the fisrt time I taste sushi.

and this?

This is the first time I taste sushi.
I would say 'This is the first time I am tasting sushi.' or 'This is the first time I tasted sushi.'
