While I was listening to a British Independent Columnist on YOUTUBE, middle ages was pronounced as you see it in the bracket right here /mIl ei gIz/ dd being thoroughly dropped. Am I right that d sound can be omitted in casual speech?

In very casual speech, /d/ may not be fully produced.

It can become a glottal in casual speech, but completely dropped sounds a bit excessive to me.
