Hello All,

When does 't' pronounce 'd' in AmE accent?
Is there any constant or fixed rules for this pronunciation?
I have not yet found any fixed-rule for these pronunciation.
Thanks.

I believe t turning into a d sound occurs more frequently with th than t.

For the word "the", the th is changed to a d sound /ð/ which is slightly different than /d/.

The occurrence of a t changing into a d sound occurs more frequently at the end of the past tense of some words like "spiked".

Perhaps it would help if you gave an example of a word you are thinking about where t changes to a d sound.

Thanks for your reply.
little , poverty ,activity,better,...

/ˈlɪl/ ,/ˈpɑvəri/ ,/ækˈtɪvəi/ ,/ˈbɛər/,...

lidle,paverdy,actividy,beder,...

Is there constant rules for these pronunciation?

I have get nothing from the link that you put.

When the t is between vowel sounds it's often pronounced as a d.

Metal and medal sound the same unless the person is really enunciating. As a child, I though "congradulations" was the spelling because that's how it sounds.

Some regions do it more. Some less. In Philadelphia, they drink "wudder" and after 10 years here, it still sounds strange to me.

That's unfortunate, but it merely means you'll have to look up "alveolar flap linguistics" in your own language. But you know what it's called now, so you should have no trouble getting information about it.

Thanks so much for your great reply. It was so helpful.
But in 'little' , 't' is not between two vowel sound, It is between 'i' and 'l'. and what about 'material'?

Thanks.
