Hi,5jj. In post #18 I said "I will change the end of the sentence to 'which I failed to think of' ". However, on second thought, I feel that "the end of the sentence" may be wrong in this situation and that the accurate and maybe the only correct phrase here should have been "the last part of the sentence". In my English writing classes, I often say sentences like "At the end of the sentence we should use an exclamation mark to conclude it." Am I also overthinking or reasoning correctly? Thanks a lot.

I disagree. It would not be uncommon to hear: Sometimes a good idea comes up in a brainstorming session. If the past tense works, the present tense is not that strange, depending on context.

I don't see any difference between "the last part of the sentence" and "the end of the sentence".

In such circumstances, it may be a good idea to try and use the English corpora which are accessible on the Web. I find them particularly useful when it comes to searching for collocations.
