Hello

Imagine you want to give a compliment to your wife who has bought a new dress. You want to tell her that the dress really really suits her. Is there an idiom / expression / colorful way of expressing this?

You look great in that dress! will rarely be taken badly from someone close to you.

Note that I've edited the thread's title. Can you see what was wrong?

Honestly, I already knew "you look great". I was hoping to learn a colorful idiom which means the same as "it suits you".

Provided you know the person really well and know she won't feel objectified, you can say "Whoa!" or make a low whistle. This is extremely delicate territory; what works with some people in some relationships could end others.

You could probably adapt the expression 'fits you to a T' for this this situation. It's not exactly the normal context for the expression, but I think it works if you allow for a bit of word play.

NOT A TEACHER

"Although we have been married for 30 years, your exquisite taste in clothing never fails to astonish me, Darling."

(A cultural note for our international friends: Remember that if a man in the United States is complimenting a female friend or colleague, he must be very careful with his words and glances, lest he unwittingly offend her.)

Now that I qualify to say that to my wife, I'll be sure to give it a try — provided she's not holding a mug of tea. Hot liquids running down one's face can really sting.

You look almost as good with that dress on as you do with it off.

Stick with the unequivocal 'I've never seen you looking lovelier'.

What not to say: 'Have you kept the receipt?'

To someone in her sixties:

You look like in your forties in that dress.

More from the realm of the old-fashioned but still possible:

That dress really becomes you.
That dress becomes you nicely.
That dress is very becoming on you.

I once made a comment to my wife about the waitress who had served us lunch. I said "She fit her dress really well." This was a somewhat crude way to observe that the young woman was tightly but, to my eyes, pleasantly packed into her dress. Do not try this at home.

(It was in Shawinigan, Quebec, in case you're wondering. My wife was not holding a mug of tea at the time.)
