(1) My teachers taught me that "as" is a conjunction and that "like" is a
preposition (some books say it is really an adjective).
(2) For "better" English we should use a conjunction to connect
two sentences.
(3) You have two sentences:
It is (The situation exists).
You said.
Therefore, I think many teachers would prefer that you say (and
especially write):
It is + as + you said.
In fact, one book says that it would be even better if you added "just":
Last month, I visited that part of the world. The situation (it) was just
as you said.
(4) Yes, you are correct. Many books say that Americans often use "like"
in this kind of sentence. But many teachers would prefer that they use
the conjunction "as" in formal writing.
