Asking optometrist clinic if they are open:

I was wondering if you guys were open.

VS

I was wondering if you guys are open.

Are both okay?

Yes. So is "Are you open?" and "What are your hours, please?"

Yes. So is "Are you open?" and "What are your hours, please?"

Why are both the above okay?

I was wondering if you guys were open. - because the sentence starts with was.

but what about: I was wondering if you guys are open.

I don't understand why the second sentence is okay.

They are both correct (more or less) because the staff are going to know that you want to know whether they are open. They're not going to question your grammar, or tell you that backshifting to 'were' would be a better option.

I wouldn't use you guys when asking a clinic; it's too informal for me. I would just use you.
