Hello!

Is there any real difference between these two sentences:
"This movie is based on his novel" and "This movie is based upon his novel"
or they are essentially the same?

The first is natural. The second means the same thing but isn't natural.

Personally I use both "on" and "upon" in this type of context, depending on euphony.
