Regarding the sentence above, I think there are two possible interpretations.

#1 Birds can signal one another of their species to warn of danger or to appeal for mating.

#2 Birds can signal one another of their species to warn of danger or they can appeal for mating.

Which do you thinkn is correct?

Why, please? Does that mean we need parallelism in both parts of the aforementioned sentence?
