Does it make sense to say a bad event "casts a dark shadow across history/countries"? Are these correct?

1. The trials and subsequent mass executions cast a dark shadow across the history of the country.
2. The genocide has cast a dark shadow over the two countries relations for decades.

They're okay except you need to make 'countries' possessive on #2.

two countries' relations
