When we use the term " a good egg " to refer to someone, is it a compliment?

Basically, I intend to know if we can use it to refer to someone in social occasions?

Likewise what about the phrase " a horse of different color "?

When we use the term " a good egg " to refer to someone, is it a compliment? Yes.

Basically, I intend to know if we can use it to refer to someone in social occasions? As it is a compliment, you can use it in almost any informal setting. It's an informal term.

Likewise what about the phrase " a horse of different color "? This is used to indicate that something is of a totally different nature. It is appropriate in most situations.

I am not a teacher.

'A good egg' is complimentary, but it is very old fashioned.

'A horse of a different color' can be found in the idioms section of this site, here.

Neither of these are very common or contemporary expressions, in my view.

Proffy, please note that a better title would have been A good egg.
