What does fight God mean? Fight for or against God?

------------------
The President, who has long relished his role as a divider who amasses power by creating a climate of fear, went on to describe his opponent, Joe Biden, as "shot" and a puppet of the radical left, before accusing Democrats of trying to "lock law-abiding Americans in their homes" during the pandemic as they fight God, guns and oil.

What do you think? I'm pretty sure you already know the answer.

If I say "Tomorrow, Mike Tyson is going to fight Muhammad Ali", is Tyson going to fight with Ali or against him?

The sentence says Biden is going to fight three things.

The sentence says Biden is going to fight three things.

(1) It says "they fight God, guns and oil", not "he fight God, guns and oil". So it says Americans fight God, guns and oil, which is the problem in understanding.

(2) Gallop polls show 70% Americans still believe in God, rather than fight God.

The inconsistency leads to the thread.

You're right: he's accusing Democrats of fighting guns, God, and oil. The percentage of Americans who are believers is irrelevant to this discussion; Trump is saying that Democrats are opposed to those three things. This is a common trope of the American right wing at the moment.

It doesn't say Americans fight God, guns and oil. Not even close.

Why do you keep opening these political threads? Are you trying to start a fight between the members? (We don't necessarily agree on politics.)

Good point, Tarheel.

GoodTaste, you seem to have time to find plenty of other topics to write about. Please don't post any more threads on political themes.

No, it doesn't. In the quote provided, Donald is only accusing Democrats of that.

You're right. It's difficult for us to comment without injecting our own points of view. I'm guilty of that myself.

We don't want to discourage GoodTaste from posting questions, but that means we need to remember that lovers of good grammar and usage are alive and well across the political spectrum — and we should proceed with that in mind.

Thanks for the reminder!

Regardless of the accuracy, it's a strategy by Trump to encourage his supporters and people with certain values to be suspicious of Biden and the Democrats.
