Is the usage of the word "fitted" incorrect in the above sentence?

(I am trying to say that the scripts or the templates used were not apt)

I would have preferred "The templates that were used did not fit the scenario" (or possibly "scenarios").

Having said that, your original isn't grammatically incorrect although the use of the word "never" is perhaps not entirely necessary.

It would be interesting to know why your manager said it wasn't correct.

This is what my manager replied -

Fitted is the past tense act of fitting some thing. i.e. I was fitted for a tuxedo.

In this case you would need to use fit because you have a past tense reference to the action itself. It should have been, "The templates that were used never fit the scenario."

PS you took "never" out of my sentence and replaced with "did not." Please tell me if it sounds correct with "never" in it.

Ah! I'm embarrassed to say your manager is right. The simple past of "fit" in this context is indeed "fit".

Yes, it fit very well.

I think "fitted" has become so commonplace that it didn't even occur to me when I read it!

I still don't like "never". I assume that you and your manager are talking about a specific example of a template being used inappropriately. I think "never" is a little over the top. It is possible, I think, that perhaps in the past, at a time that neither you nor your manager is aware of, that that particular template might have fit the scenario very well.

I was sending a coaching log to one of the associates here. It goes to my manager as well. So, he corrected me stating that it is incorrect.

"Fitted" does exist. Your manager was right when he quoted "being fitted for a tuxedo" meaning that someone underwent a fitting session at a tailor's shop.

This is my manager's reply when I shared the above link:

The definition was not in question in fact I had already given a similar example:
" i.e. I was fitted for a tuxedo."

In this case the usage is the concern.
The original sentence was:
"The templates that were used never fitted the scenario."
As you noted in a different e-mail if you change "never" with "did not" and "fitted" with fit it sounds better, but the same is true with the never as well.
The sentence has 2 parts, first we reference the templates that were used (Past tense), and second we talk about them fitting the scenario (Which should be present because rather they fit the specific scenario in the past or present doesn't change. They always do or do not fit the scenario hence the present tense.)

There is no specific rule for this it is just the way the language works.
