Leonardo da Vinci was a man of many talents. He is no doubt best known as the painter of the “Mona Lisa.” But painting was only one of his talents.

For the second sentence, the full stop mark is in the quotation marks. I wonder if that’s correct.
 
For me, it isn't. The full stop belongs at the end of the sentence. The quotation marks should enclose only the part needing to be highlighted.

If the full stop marked the end of a quoted sentence, I'd understand putting it inside the quotation marks, but here it isn't.
 
For me, it is fine. That is how Americans do it. Punctuation inside quotation marks.

I gave up the American style I'd learned in school several decades ago. The British style is much more logical.
