He put the keys in lock and turned it. As always, silence greeted him when he walked inside his apartment. No wife, no dog. He was afraid the loneliness would become too much to bear soon.

You can't fit two keys into one lock.

Do we really need to know that he put a key in a lock and turned it? That's pretty basic. How about opening with this?

He unlocked the door to his apartment and went in. As always, silence greeted him.

I have a feeling you'll want something more elegant than "went in". See what you can come up with.
