I wrote this. It's part of a dialog.

I was freezing and there were no other houses in sight, so I broke into the conservatory. I was just going to stay there until it started getting light, but then I found that the door to the house wasn't locked, so I decided to go inside and wait.

Conservatory: BRITISH - a room with a glass roof and walls, attached to a house at one side and used as a sun lounge or for growing delicate plants.

Question: If 'I' would have to try to open the door to find out it wasn't locked, is 'found' very natural here or would you prefer something else?

It has its usual meaning of ‘discovered’.
